Game Doctor takes home Rising Star Award

Game Doctor was awarded the Rising Star Award in May for the AccelerateHER competition organised by Investing Women. The Rising Star award recognised a female founded business which showed great potential but was not trading internationally.

The Application Process

The AccelerateHER competition launched in February. All applicants were asked to submit a 3 minute pitch describing their business, team, growth and finances. The Investing Women team then shortlisted the applicants to semi-finalists (100 applicants down to 18!). The conditions for applying were: Applicants had to be female and have founded or co-founded a company; Applicants had to be trading in Scotland.

The Semi-Finals

The semi-finals were held in April in Edinburgh Skyscanner offices and all semi-finalists had to deliver a pitch in front of a panel of expert judges. Semi-finalist judges included Vicki Fraser, Principal Product Manager at Skyscanner, Trish McClay, Eagle Lab Ecosystem Manager at Barclays Eagle Lab Edinburgh and Kirsty Ramsay, VP Consulting Services CGI. The semi-finals was a fantastic experience and has really evolved the Game Doctor pitch deck (we definitely recommend pitching your business at as many competitions and events as possible).

The semi-finalists (18) were then shortlisted down to 8 finalists.. and 3 rising star finalists. Game Doctor was shortlisted as rising star finalist alongside AlterWaste, a fantastic start-up from Edinburgh developing an alternative to plastics from egg shells and Cybershell Solutions.

The Finals

In May all finalists gathered for the finals at Eagle Labs, Edinburgh. The level of peer-support at this event was unbelievable, with all finalists supporting each other massively during the final pitches.  We were absolutely thrilled to win the Rising Star award at the finals. In addition to amazing recognition for our hard work over the last three years, the award also included in-kind legal support and accountancy support from Scottish-based firms Aberdein Considine and  Chiene and Tait.

In addition, Game Doctor will also join the three winners and Investing Women at the Berlin Digital Health Conference/Summit in June.  At this event, we aim to make valuable connections with other experts in digital health and technology.

Investing Women, run by successful entrepreneur and angel investor Jackie Waring, is a Scottish-based venture that aims to support women and female founders working in business. Organisations like Investing Women are extremely important; in the U.K only 2% of all investments are awarded to female founders.

Investing Women aim to change these statistics by giving female founders professional support through competitions like AccelerateHER. In addition to business competitions, Investing Women also offer mentorship, training and networking opportunities.
